Once Upon A Memory by ~aeconley:iconaeconley:

We sat on the edge of the dock side by side.
The slow wind created lazy ripples in the lake below our feet.
The trees mimicking the water, also sang a lovely song.
The sun kissed the treetops goodnight as dusk began to slip in.
He spoke and I found solace in his words.
I always do.

~

In betrayal of the peaceful moment, storm clouds steadily rolled in.
The wind became harsh and his voice began to drown out.
To fade.
He laid his hand on my shoulder and I closed my eyes.
I knew our time had grown short.
A flash of light burst beyond my fallen lids,
Fear clutched my heart with the clap of thunder that quickly followed.
It was close.
The storm.
The turmoil.
It had settled upon, in between and throughout us.
I did not dare open my eyes
I knew all to well what I would see
And what I would not.
I felt him lean in close and though I could not hear them,
I knew the words he had whispered.
The sky opened up and my tears rained down on me.
My soul returned the howl of the wind
And the crack of my heart could be heard over that of the sky.
I turned to where he should have been, would have been, could have...
Only to find myself alone.
Though I could still feel his hand.

~

And it rained.
And it rained.
And it rains.

Haunted by the love that was,
Not enough.
Too much.
Never at all.
